In the vast expanse of global trade, the shipping industry is the unsung hero that keeps economies connected. Once again in the last couple of months, this vital lifeline has faced unprecedented challenges. The cost of shipping a 40-foot container from Asia to Northern Europe & UK has skyrocketed, seeing increases of 400 % on the same time last year. ( May 23) We thought it may be useful to try and summarise what’s behind this surge, and what does it mean for business and customers alike.
The Red Sea Diversion: At the heart of the issue lies the continued Red Sea diversion. This maritime detour has disrupted the delicate balance of supply and demand on the Asia-Europe trade lanes. To maintain service calls, these routes now require approximately 15-20% more vessels than usual. Carriers are struggling to meet this demand, resulting in operational blank sailings—where scheduled services go unfulfilled due to vessel shortages.
Demand and Nervousness: Western economies are rebounding, leading to higher-than-expected demand. However, there’s more to the story. The scars of the pandemic have left shippers fearing future capacity shortages, they may be over-ordering now to secure space for the coming months. This nervousness has contributed significantly to the current freight rate surge.
General Rate Increases (GRIs): Carriers have responded by implementing GRIs. These across-the-board rate hikes have stuck, impacting shippers’ bottom lines. Congestion at Mediterranean ports, Singapore, and Colombo exacerbates the situation. Ultra-large container vessels avoid the Med, leading to increased arrivals at ports like Algeciras, Tanger Med, Transshipment traffic has surged, further straining port capacities.
Container Equipment Shortage and Tariff Uncertainty: China’s export routes face a shortage of container equipment which is exacerbated by extended transits and availability. Additionally, the Geo – Political spectre of future tariffs on Chinese goods entering the US adds upward pressure. Shippers may be over-ordering into the States as a precaution creating unforeseen demand and adding to the overall shortages.
In summary, the surge in freight rates is a perfect storm—a convergence of factors that caught the industry off guard. However, we also believe these current price hikes may have already had an adverse effect on the UK market as buyers remain wary and, in many cases, unable to support such huge rate increases. This has manifested in slowing trade in some industries rather than driving it and those affected have adopted a wait and see approach. To see if this early “Peak Season” as it has been dubbed, washes out and more reflective trade conditions and pricing return later in the year.
